get your oils on!!!

I'm actually doing other things in my life right now, but this is definitely the most fun! How many posts can I do about this new adventure? Only time will tell - so if you get bored, I can't blame you! Just click by anything here that has the word 'oil' in it! If you have ever thought, "gee, I would really like to try 'oil paint' - Do It! Go directly to your art supply store, plunk down the money and don't look back! Well, I'm only one person, of course, but this is a definite turning point for me. Below is another progression. Yes, I know, some of you have the big yawn on! God, does the woman do anything else! you ask. Yes, yes, of course I do. But......... Anyway it is now drying and I'm plying other canvases and heavy paper! And of course I am truly doing other things! I'm doing them as fast as I can, truly, so I can get back to my work space! I'm hopeful I will post about something else soon. I truly will. Very soon........Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Hi Jeane: Your enthusiasm is contagious! I used water based media; and have a sensitivity to all things air born. How is the smell, fume issue with these yummy oils?

grrl+dog said...

I can see the growth every post, so keep going... What an adventure...

Hi Leslie - okay, before talk about fumes, etc., I just have to tell you that each morning I load my 'big rocks' first - then I add a few pebbles and try and stay away from any sand or water - such a great visual - anyway, fumes - well oils do have a very distinctive odor - it does not seem to bother me and as I make my way through these gifted paints, I will start adding the purest oils I can find - I'm using odorless mineral spirits and that is all - I will eventually put a coat of varnish on finished paintings - what I have found is that the oils are probably less toxic then the plastic acrylics that are petroleum based - there is alot of good info out there - I have no problems with ventilation - so on I go - so that's what I know so far.....

It's great to see you so enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoying your oils! Whoopee!

Wow Jeane, you really took to the big rocks time managment tool! I love it! Let me guess, laundry is not a big rock......Art is.....

Beautiful!
Do you have more control with oil? Or not? I have often wondered. Oil seems, I don't know, so permanent, that I've thought I'd be a bit afraid of it. I do love what you are doing!

Happy weekend!

Jeane said...

Hey Grrl! - it's a fabulous adventure - thanks...

thanks Raph - I am, I am......

LOL! Leslie - yes, in a way - big rocks include, work out, art, 1 hr. house work (so the wash is part of a big rock) and one planned meal a day with Jim, time with friends - then my jobs theatre/video/design work when they are on the front burner and on and on.....

thanks Pamela - hmmm, more control - well, right now, not so much ( I'm getting closer) and permanent?, I don't think of any paint as permanent because it can all be wiped out or covered over - I like this because the colors are so rich, I love the way the paint moves - I have more choices as far as building layers - thin, thick, etc...I was intimidated also, but I'm so glad I jumped in......and I see you found Buster's blog - isn't it great! have a great weekend!

Nodding, smiling,,
I so totally 'get it'.
Oils,, my first big love. I always go back to them sooner or later. Fortunately, I am not bothered by odors or fumes either.
With good ventilation.
Before I ever painted, or 'arted' at all, I modeled for oil classes. I was immediately hooked by the smell of oil paint, and knew right then that someday I would paint with oils.
The textures, the richness,,,,the joy,,,yeah, Jeane,,,,you're hooked!

This last piece seems to take me through it somehow. Thanks for the trip!

Jeane, WOW! This is freakin' fabulous. I'm not bored at all with your oil experiments. I started my own experiments yesterday with one color and had no reaction to the paint. *Grin* That means a trip to the art supply store. Yahoo! I like the drips that you got there too.

You are doing wonderfully in oil... Yesterday I was out photographing tree holes. The final painting... the yellow drives deep into the center hole. What depth! Thanks for showing the progression.

Derrick said...

Hi Jeane,

Lots going on here! I like the zing of the yellow, top left, and the hints of it elsewhere in the picture! And now I can say that I know a film producer! Haunting piano piece on your promo film!

Katherine said...

I am loving what is happening here with this piece. Beautiful!

The only fumes I have touble with is the varnish. But then that is when I get the fans going.

Jeane said...

good morning Babs -exactly - everything you said - hooked!

Annie - you're welcome! I took quite a trip myself - I'm potting some geraniums today! - not a garden, but ..........

Shayla, I'm so excited for you - what brand are you using? - and what are you using to thin your paints? oh, shoot, maybe I should just get over to your place to have this conversation!

Hi Chewy - don't you just love 'tree holes'? - gorgeous pieces of art! I hope you post some of those photos!

Derrick - I'm so glad you like the yellow - I like it because it's wrong and glaring and like mustard dripped onto the canvas - and I'm so glad you commented on the music on the promo video - I have to build that music myself and I know absolutely nothing about music except what I like to hear - I have a music program on my computer that I use - I play around with it and then I have to close my eyes on the playback so I can just listen to it - this play is a sophisticated mystery, so had to find something that would feed that mood...not my strong suit! thanks....

thank you Katherine! - notice the drips! ha! haven't touche the other painting - thank god! - yard work today!

Oh, Jeane! This one is just luscious!! The oils give it such a richness. wow.

Okay, I know I've been saying I need to start painting again or collaging or something. I need to get over to Dick Blick and plunk down the money and not look back!!!

Seth said...

I for one love hearing about your "oils" and am really enjoying this new direction for you. Love the banner too!

Jeane said...

thanks Daryl - a definite turning point for me and I'm sure people are sick of hearing about it, but .......thanks so much

Hi Willow and thanks - well, don't feel alone - I would still be saying that if Daryl hadn't cleaned out her closet and so graciously sent me her unused paints! - hit blicks running and go home and make a mark! you won't be able to stop! loved your interview.....

thanks Seth! I love the banner too - we walk by a field almost everyday (well actually quite a few fields) and the grass has been laid down by snow and I just love how it swirls and the new green grass starting to come up! it reminds me of rolling water.....

Hi Jeane, I've started with regular old windsor and newton. I just found out that most brands of oil paints would be good. The ingredients are simple. I avoided the ones you can use with water, because they can contain formaldehyde. I'm thinning them with linseed oil. I guess that used to be a common practice. There is also the option of Spike oil of Lavender. That's a solvent that may work for some (if they're not sensitive to lavender of course)

I've washed my brushes out in cooking oil (cheap stuff) and then with soap and water if I want to get the cooking oil out. Those were the instructions I got from a reputable artist. The only problem is that my sample is still wet and I'm going on day three. There may be something I've missed- perhaps I used too much oil. I'll call him on Monday.

Hello there Jeane,

your oils look great! I always work with watercolours and acrylics, also a bit afraid of working with oils. But your enthusiasm gets me going. :-) I think i will give it a chance. You're absolutely right, the colours are much richer than acrylics.

Nice to read you b.t.w.

Oh Jeane!! I love these!!

You just might inspire me to get out my oils... now that I don't have as much time to paint, I won't mind waiting for things to dry a bit.

I especially like the one at the top...

Jeane said...

hi Robyn - thanks so much, you are always so encouraging....

Hi Shayla - popped over to your blog and put in my 2cents....

Hello Momo Luna and welcome - thanks for choosing to follow my blog and your kind comment - on my way over to visit!

LOL Patrice! - maybe this would be a good time to drag them out since your time is so limited - the census lady was here about two days ago and I thought of you!

Hi-
If anyone can get me to go back to oils, it's you! All I have to do is get rid of the ton of paste I use for my collages..Want to trade?
You are so prolific!!

Poetic Artist - hello and welcome - thank you for your kind comment and please come often! - will visit your site this evening....
