It's been two months since I received a gift of oil paints from Daryl at
'on the m104'. I finally feel like I'm rounding the corner as far as a new way of working. I will not bore you with particulars since I've posted about this journey already. I'll just show what has been coming out of my workspace. It has opened up new ways of thinking and doing and some new ideas are now on the front burner. The following pieces have taught me so much. I'm eager now to branch out.
These first two little paintings (8" X 10") were the canvases that Daryl sent with the paints. I've reworked them several times.

These next two are the same painting - the first is the underpainting and then the final piece.

This is the same evolution. First the underpainting and then the final piece. This is one of the canvases I got at the Goodwill.

As a photographer, I'm intrigued by the whole painting process, and what you did -- showing the underpainting and then the final piece -- is informative yet adds even MORE mystery. What a journey from beginning to end! Thank you for taking the time to present both "versions" of your paintings. -- Carol Leigh
Yummy stuff Jeane! Happy Memorial Day.
two months... wow, what a ride it has been, and your images have become more integrated and have a glow about them...like oils do. Congrats!
I also find it fascinating always to see the process. The before and the after. Great to see the depth of your beautiful work.
Hi Jeane...you could never "bore" me with the particulars...always love hearing what you have to say.
These paintings have beautiful form and depth...such a wonder to the eye.
So fun to see the progression from the underpainting to the final(?) pieces...that last one is simply luscious in it's colors.
You rock Jeane! These are great. Me who usually loves dynamic and bold find myself drawn to the subtlety of the light green ones on the top. Would love to see you work. So please bore us with the details.
Hi Carol Leigh - thank you so much and I'm so happy you stopped by :)
thanks Leslie and I hope you had a wonderful day also! see you soon :)
Hey Grrl - thanks - I'm still pretty high on the learning curve, but I feel I've got some of the basics down - at least I'm past the making mud stage! whew!
thank you Seth - making this change has been a good move for me!
Hello Jo - it's getting better each time I work - I'm not good at one step at a time - I like to run as fast as I can forward until I fall usually, but this has been different - the oils have made me slow down - that drying time thingy - but I love painting this way - so on I go, learning a bit each day and to me, that's exciting xxo
LOL! Cynjon - well, I feel these are final pieces at least right now - I've been lurking at your place - you make me laugh so hard! thanks for coming by!
Katherine, LOL! I'm surprised that you are drawn to the little green ones too! details? oh, god, I just go in and scrub away with my little brushes - that's one thing, I use pretty small brushes even on big surfaces :) thanks Katherine!
jeane, these are spectacular. the slowing down comes across... it's powerful. xo
Love the subdued colours in the first 2 pieces and the sense of emerging or disappearing there. And then the final one with those rich colours.
I love the way you've let the paint run down the canvas. (The texture on your header is wonderful too!)
And the underpainting colours then being overpainted with complementary colours - I wish I could see this in real life as I bet there's such a vibrancy of colour.
Hi Jeane,
I am always fascinated by the underpainting. In the first set of before and after pics there is a semblance of the before in the final version but the second pair are quite different. For you, do your final versions have anything to do with the underpainting that you begin with? Sorry if that is a silly question!
Your oils are wonderful... I love seeing the underpainting and then the finished painting, the final version.
The last one with that deep luscious red really appeals to me. I am loving your journey with oils.
Jacky xox
OH I WANT them .. I want the first one so bad I can taste it ... oh ...
good morning Lynne - slowing down is always a good thing - thanks - I love your new profile pic! wave!
thanks Annie - the first two have that sense of new spring growth I think, something like baby corn :)
I love to let the paint drip Raph! it does such interesting things and then I can keep the best drips - I'm finding that the oils dry darker then they seem at first, which is not a bad thing, but something to be aware of - thanks, Raph :)
good morning Derrick - underpaintings - well, when I'm first starting? the feeling is very different - I'm just messing around, throwing paint here and there and seeing what emerges and then i sort of fall into the painting until it is finished - finding the shapes and forms - sometimes the underpainting lives in the final piece and sometimes it doesn't - most of them start off as brush cleaning canvases (hate to waste paint) or a place where I can try a new color or build something I've been thinking about, etc. hmmm, don't know whether I answered your question and it certainly wasn't a silly question....
thanks so much Jacky - I'm enjoying the journey tremendously! give Mrs. Mizzle a hug for me :)
LOL! Daryl thank you and we will talk!
Jeane these are gorgeous! I especially like the third one, but I think you know I love color! It is great seeing your process. The joy you feel in making art is so present in what you do.
wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I am always to happy when your blog pops up in my bloglines because I know I'm in for a treat.
I am not suprised at all with how you've taken to oils. lovely work jeane
Your blog is never boring..particulars or no particulars. The top two are my favourites.
This is wonderful...I like your term "rounding the corner"! You have put the time in and it shows, I love the paint handling and obviously you have "mud making" under control. These pieces speak of beautiful delicate color. Keep going...now that you are around the corner it is possibly a straight road ahead!
thank you Elizabeth - I do love what I do for sure :)
Bridgette, thank you so much - I'm thinking about encaustic soon - it seems such a good match
I'm glad you like the top two Robyn - they remind me of the color of spring - thanks :)
Hi Mary Ann - thank you - well, a straight road never seems to offer itself except for stretches and then a curve! I appreciate your comment :)
gorgeous shots all of them. love the luminous color that oil brings, but also the way you have used them here. i relate to the forms and compositions very much.
really nice, Jeane. xx m.a.
I love to see your underpaintings, and how they add depth to your final product. Great work... and thatnks for your note! Roxanne
Love the way you've built up the layers, they are great before you even add more. You could stop along the way and still have a wonderful composition.
Hi Mary Ann - thanks so much - I love to create little sections of tension when I can and then space to breath a bit and just that peek underneath.... :)
thank you Roxanne - I'm back to drawing grids underneath - I use to do it all the time and then quit, but they returned - interesting what comes....
Hello Ro - you are the queen of layering - I look at your journal pages with mouth wide open - don't know about you, but I find it hard to stop sometimes - always just one more line, mark, color, white out, etc. so glad you stopped by :)
Love these especially the first two.
Have LOVED seeing your adventure in oils!
This first painting is a gorgeous gem! Greens being the color of my heart,it ranks up there I think as my favorite that I've seen you do. Very soft,,,serene,,,yet so much to look for in it!
Just wonderful!
Hi Janet and thanks - small is a difficult form for me to work in so i'm glad you like them :)
thank you so much Babs - greens are not a color I have usually worked with and small, like I told Janet, is difficult for me also - so I'm cruising much new territory :)
