changing gears.....

Sometimes it's a good idea to change gears! I fought with a painting all day on Friday and decided it was time to change it up a bit, so I put away my hard boards for awhile and grabbed some paintings I did on paper during the winter - I picked about five paintings that were just so so and started doing some very quick painting/sketches - it was fun and I still have a couple more to do.....I'll probably do some collage and wax before I go back to my hard boards - I seem to cycle through these three ways to work in my art practice and they all feed each other.....

these are all mixed media on paper, 24x19......

have a fabulous week! and make art!

These are so expressive and each one with a unique persona...
So glad to hear other artists are "cycling" through media/techniques, too. I haven't yet figured out why we do that...? Boredom? Stuckness? Idea flooding?
D) all of the above
Duh.

good morning DJ - I think it is for all the reasons you mention - I love all three forms and they each inform the other - I've prepped a board for some collage today with some old work - it makes my brain work in a different way and I like that :)

Yes, it is fascinating to experience the cycling that you describe. It's a great way to let some paintings rest and to visit a number of approaches that may eventually inform future work.

You go, Jeane! Change gears, shift into overdrive, double clutch--whatever you like, because your work is wonderful.

It's always good when we take our best advice! I do believe in the changing it up...I'm in the "clean off the studio table and begin something new place" actually more of a return but change for sure!

Hi Jeane,

It's always the left eye that has prominence. Why do you suppose that is?

Reassuring to hear that this process is about changing things up and shifting gears because I've worried that I was just easily distracted.

This process you use is so interesting .. I could never paint that way ... admire your style so much!

good morning Melinda - you are always very kind, but my work sucks alot of the time but I think that is necessary to keep pushing the work - pushing into new territory and then refining the new ideas, so I guess I'm in one of those pushing times xxo

hello Mary Ann - I agree, changing it up to find new stuff xxo

I don't know Derrick - I've thought about that many times - even when I purposely try it the other way, I always come back to the left eye being the prominent one - weird huh?

so funny louciao, I think we have to try on new things to keep pushing ourselves, but I also think we each have a very distinct style and way of speaking with our art :)

paint may not be your thing Daryl, but he camera sure is! some fabulous work recently xxo

hello jeane, changing gears is really a very good method to get new ideas and to see the paintings from a different angle. I'm curious about your hardboards in future!

I will accompany more times.
Hugs from Brazil.

I like the first of these. Like someone looking forwards and backwards at the same time.

good morning mano, I agree totally - changing gears gives a fresh approach :)

hello Antonio, so glad you came by, thanks, :)

I love your idea of looking forwards and backwards Annie xxo

Is anything finished?..only when the artist says so...I love that you keep picking up on your earlier efforts.
The 2nd portrait is haunting!

Jean these works are beautiful and I can so relate to where you are coming from; I do the same. I think it's because I absolutely throw nothing out and when I dig it out later I have a fresh perspective and a better chance of making it work.

good morning Lynne - I doubt anything is ever finished because we are never finished - what seemed right yesterday is now just another element today because we are in a different place - I think we can hold our place with certain pieces and use them as markers xxo

hello Stan - yes!, I agree because it's a new day with new energy and we can add to what we did last year - it's like keeping a big ole diary :)

Great faces. I would never get board with one of your paintings- so many interesting layers and cracks.

good morning Shayla, and thank you - these are fun to do to get me to another place xxo

Changing gears can be a good thing; obviously it was for you! I'm so stubborn I sometimes just keep banging my head against the same wall, if you know what i mean. I have to make myself step back and do something different for a while!
