It's a very real challenge to work in my workspace during January and February - I basically have an outdoor shed with minimal insulation that I converted into a workspace - IT IS COLD!! I have a little space heater and that gets the temps into the 50's and then I layer my outerwear and that lets me work for a couple of hours during the day which I am so thankful for!! I can bring work into the house to dry. We've had little showers of snow for the last two days, but it doesn't even stick to the ground, thank god! Other places are not so lucky - being so close to the water keeps us a bit warmer and I'm very thankful. I have finished several paintings in the past few days and I'll share the one I finished today. The work, even though a bit more settled then a couple of weeks ago, is still coming pretty fast. I don't question this anymore - I just take advantage of it and paint as much as possible. This too will stop and then I will have to dig deep to start new work. And when those dryer times come, there is the excitement of trying new things - I always love messing with video, or my digital camera, new mediums, etc. But for now, painting is on the front burner.
this is oil on paper, 24x19, 'Saturday Armor'

You know, you can almost feel the cold in this, these layers of frost and vapour.
love the palette here. It's a beauty! Love your words of wisdom too. Happy painting. I've made a couple of pairs of fingerless gloves out of old wool socks lately. They're really cute and might come in handy in this cool weather. It's snowing here right now (which looks lovely but has other implications)
wow, jeane... this is gorgeous!!! everything about it sends me...
xoxo
Wonderful! I love the palette you used on this... it's a wonderful piece, you should be very happy with this! Fantastic job! I haven't played with oils in a long time, the drying time intimidates me, but who knows, I love to experiment... there might come a day when I get past it. What kind of paper do you use? How do you keep it from buckling? :)
Really rich textures in this piece. I, too, am fighting a cold studio these days - trying not to be daunted by winter.
Wonderful painting Jeane - seems like a wintery warmth glowing - much like you are experiencing - it's cold here in the uk too but luckily my studio is in the house with a radiator to keep me cosy!
Love your new header - I was looking out at such a scene yesterday as the sun fell away and the air fell colder and colder. Wishing you big socks and fast brushwork. It really will warm up soon. Ax
and that front burner is really putting out some heat, even though your work studio might not be! This is a beautiful piece, love the subtleties.
LOVE that new header shot .. OH MY .. and the new painting ..
good morning DJ, you are totally right - didn't see it until you pointed it out!! geez, could I be anymore influenced by my surroundings? - so glad you stopped by - I continue to follow your blog as a lurker and love it always - comments seem so lame after I read what you write :))
ooohhhhh, yah! the fingerless glove - a staple of mine - so glad you found me on FB Carole! - a very nice connection - it is snowing here today and tomorrow and the next day I guess - I'm not a fan, but will deal!! xo
Hi Lynnie!! thank you so much, I kinda like this one too!! snow here in our little seashore town this week - it gets an UGH from me xoxox
thank you Deb, I adore oils and don't mind the drying time - I paint wet on wet, so I don't have to wait for layers to dry to work - in fact I don't like to paint dry on dry - it doesn't give me as many options!!! :)
oh, man, a cold studio can shut down work if we let it Susan!! carry on sister! think of me bundled up trying to get paint to flow as you work in your cold digs too!! thanks for coming by :)
Hi Rosie, thank you! ah, a cozy radiator, clinking and clanging along with you as you work - sounds wonderful! xo
Big Socks! yes! winter boots, neck scarves, fingerless gloves, fleece pull over, etc., etc., etc., the header is a photo of how the sun looked a few days ago near a swampy area on a little frontage road I walk often - snow today Annie - yes, it will get warm again xo
thank you so much Bren! I am very focused right now on getting these paintings out of me - many of them will never see the light of day, but a few will for sure - the rest will be fodder for other things :)
thank you Daryl - header is a photo on a frontage road in front of our driveway - I always like how the sun is so milky in the winter - I walk by a swamp that has been decaying for years and so much of it is truly interesting xo
You exhibit great discipline, energy, and beauty in your work and in your cold studio! I'm hoping that the environment continues to inform your work, but is not too uncomfortable.
This piece shimmers with atmosphere. Excellent work!
Sending you warm hugs from here.
Jackpot!
Especially into the far lower right corner.
And your header is a wonder to behold, isn't it?
I am such a weather weenie. So proud of you being so dedicated as to work in the cold. Talk about showing up,,,,to the extreme!
But it pays so well,,,,,
so appreciate the WARM! hugs today Melinda - snowed about 5 more inches last night - this piece is a real touchstone for me - it's pushing me onto a more complex path that I'm finding very challenging - hope you sit under that fabulous Tuscon son and paint your brains out xo
too funny Babs! you always make me laugh - I like the lower right corner also - it was the last section to be informed by the rest of the painting - very anxious to get to work today - loved your conversation with your sculpture piece!!! so good! xo
